'Young' George Swinford at the Swinford Museum at Filkins
Housed in a 17th century cottage, this fine collection of local domestic, agricultural, trade and craft tools provides a unique picture of a bygone rural community.
One of Oxfordshire's oldest small rural museums, it was originally set up by George Swinford in the 1930's with the help of Sir Stafford Cripps.
We always welcome group visits whereby we offer a warm welcome, visit of the museum, short history walk of the village and a cream tea. See below and events page for opening times and more information on how to book a group visit.
If you are researching family who lived in Filkins, we can help with assistance from the church records which have been transcribed by Gerald Webb and Diane Blackett. A small donation is always appreciated.
The museum is now closed until Thursday May 1st 2025.
The 2024 Season has reached its end and we are now re-organising the musuem to display new exhibitions for 2025.
We will be commemorating the 80 years since VE Day 1945 with an amazing exhibition displaying all our WWII artifacts.
There will be other exhibitions showcasing local industry.
